Adult
At First Presbyterian Church we believe strongly in the importance of adult Christian Education. Christ calls his followers to actively pursue spiritual growth and enrichment. Regular participation in Adult Sunday School Classes is one of the primary ways in which this goal may be achieved. Active involvement in Sunday School also provides members with valuable opportunities for fellowship and the establishment of mutually supportive relationships which are so important for a healthy spiritual life.
All classes begin at 9:00 on Sunday mornings unless otherwise noted.
Bereans: This class is studying Paul’s letters to the churches starting with Galatians,. This class, which welcomes all ages, enjoys in-depth discussion and works on applying what we learn to our lives. (Room 211; Ginna Siniard, facilitator)
Comrades: Using the PC(USA) curriculum, The Present Word, the lessons in early fall are on “The Inescapable God”, with scriptures from Exodus and Psalms. In winter (December – February), the subject is “Assuring Hope” taken from Isaiah, Matthew, and Mark. This class includes many senior adults, but all are welcome. (Room 116; Bill Lummus, facilitator)
Genesis: Through an emphasis on group discussion, this class, which targets singles and couples in their 30’s, takes a closer look at the Bible, its people, and its impact on our culture to enliven our homes and families. Currently we are studying the book of Revelation. We hope to respond to the Spirit with intentional choices, supporting each others’ endeavors. (Room 212; Tish Hammer, facilitator)
Healing: Currently in their third year of training, this class uses materials from the Order of St. Luke “Going Deeper.” For more information, contact Jim or Martha Barnett at 776-2937. (Room 213; Jim and Martha Barnett, facilitators)
Inquirers: During several Sundays throughout the year, the pastoral staff will offer an introduction to the Christian faith, the denomination, and First Presbyterian Church. If you are considering joining FPC or just have an inquiring mind come to this class and bring all your questions. Dates for the class will be published in the weekly bulletin. (Library; Dr. Mark Mueller, facilitator)
Seminar Class: This class makes use of the works of well-known scholars in Bible, theology and church history. The class is more academic than devotional or doctrinal. Brief lectures, reading, and group discussion assist a learning atmosphere which encourages the free expression of ideas and feelings. Currently the class is studying The Parables of Jesus by William Barclay. (Rooms 114-115; Rev. Charles Danner, facilitator)
Harry B. Wade: Since the class likes shared discourse and opinions, the rotating group leaders are picking a headline or story from the newspaper and as homework the group is considering the biblical connections, implications, and applications of the current event and discussing it the next week. Part of the assignment is to pull a verse from the Bible that relates to the event, consider faith in reaction to the story, and share it with the group. Many members of this class have school-age children, although all are welcome. (Room 23; Drew and Leslie Lockhart, facilitators)
Wilson/Chapman: This class strives to understand the Bible both in its historical context and as it relates to our lives today. For the fall this class is studying the 100 most important passages in the Bible. This is an extended study beginning with Genesis and finally concluding with Revelation, in the order the passages are in the Bible. We will be studying one to two passages a week, beginning with a two-week introduction and then starting with Genesis 1. Group discussion is encouraged and all ages are welcome to attend. (Rooms 112-113; David Baer-Peckham and Dag Rowe, facilitators)
Mamie B. Wise: Using lecture and discussion, this class studies books of the Bible. The class is made up mostly of retirement-age people, but all are welcome. (Rooms 110-111; Bill Johnson, facilitator)
